Village Health Worker (VHW) Program

The VHW Program will be the first stage of our Rural Development Project (RDP).  It will focus on the education of one VHW per village in 10-15 villages.  These health workers will be trained to take care of up to 50% of each village’s healthcare needs.

The program will begin with the selection and training of two competent women healthcare workers in an intensive training class over a period of approximately three weeks.  These two women will be the VHW Lead Trainers and will be employed by the RDP.  They will be assisted by and work with a RDP Coordinator, also a RDP employee.  The VHW Lead Trainers will be trained to teach the following:

Basic Sanitation

Hygiene

Disease Prevention

Basic Diagnostic Skills (i.e. fever, parasites, etc.)

First Aid (i.e. wound care, fever reduction, etc.)

We hope to begin the first VHW training in the summer of 2009 with the education of the VHW Lead Trainers.  These women, along with the RDP Coordinator, will travel to the selected villages and assist the villagers in the selection of their VHW.  They will then conduct the training program 2-4 days per week over a span of several weeks.  The VHW will also receive further education on more advanced subjects at later follow-up trainings.  This program will expand to include several groups of women.

The VHW Program will utilize and depend on the HFLA nursing students for support and training.  These nurses will help teach the classes, visit the villages, and develop future modules for the VHW women.  Both groups will benefit from this collaboration.  The nursing students will also be heavily involved in the other areas of the RDP.
