Rural Development Program
The Rural Development Project (RDP) is an effort to support the rural areas of the Akatsi District in a holistic manner. In the Akatsi District the rural areas are beset by poor farming technologies, infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Not all of these areas can or should be addressed through programs like the RDP. Road improvement is the job of the government and mobile phone access the private sector. However, as we place our focus on improving primarily the healthcare of the rural villages we want to keep this holistic approach at the forefront. We do not want to rule out future work focusing on agriculture, education, clean water, and other necessities of these rural communities.
The early stages of the RDP will focus on healthcare delivery to the villages surrounding the Akatsi town center. This will be accomplished through educational programs of both Village Health Workers (VHW) as well as the general village population. We will focus on prevention of disease contraction and transmission, with an eye towards hygiene and malaria. The RDP will begin slowly and will grow upon the foundation created by the HFLA nursing and VHW programs. It is our hope that within a period of five years we will have reached each village in the district, providing them with the services they need.
